Okhla Vihar opened on 25 December 2017 on the Magenta Line, between Jamia Millia Islamia and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh. DMRC describes it as an elevated station in close vicinity of the Jamia Nagar police station and very near Okhla Head, Al-Shifa Hospital, the Delhi electoral office, Abul Fazal Enclave and Hari Kothi Road.

Construction began in 2014, with Afcons Infrastructure Limited as the contractor, on green land acquired from Uttar Pradesh’s Irrigation Department. A dedicated Delhi Metro police post, Okhla Vihar Metro Police Station, is on the station’s ground floor, alongside the adjoining Jamia Nagar police station. Each of the three gates is signed for a different side: Abul Fazal Enclave and Hari Kothi Road, Okhla Head and Canal Colony, or the Jamia Nagar police station.
