Lajpat Nagar opened on the Violet Line on 3 October 2010, with the first section of that line, in time for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. It became an interchange on 6 August 2018, when the Pink Line arrived. DMRC classes the station as elevated and notes that it is also known as Bureau of Energy Efficiency Lajpat Nagar.

Changing between the two lines does not require leaving the ticketed area. Gate 5 belongs to the Pink Line side and opens onto Block 1, Lajpat Nagar III; the other gates lead to Defence Colony and the Lajpat Nagar Market. On the Violet Line the neighbours are Jangpura and Moolchand; on the Pink Line, South Extension and Vinobapuri.
