DMRC describes Shankar Vihar as a defence privilege station, the only one of its type in the Delhi Metro network, with limited entry and exit. It connects the 35 INF BDE Shankar Vihar housing societies, the Army Public School Shankar Vihar, and the Varuna naval mess and canteen. Its two gates follow the same pattern: Gate 1 at the Army Public School and Gate 2 at the army residential area.

The elevated station, with side platforms, opened on 29 May 2018 as part of Phase III and was built at a cost of ₹31.55 crore. It stands on the Magenta Line between Terminal 1-IGI Airport and Vasant Vihar, on the section from Krishna Park Extension to Botanical Garden.
