ITO took longer to open than its builders planned. The underground Violet Line station was finished in September 2014 and trial runs began that December, but the 971-metre section from Mandi House could not start carrying passengers because the safety inspection could not be carried out under the Metro Railway General Rules. The Urban Development Ministry amended the rules to allow operations on single-line sections, and the station, originally due in March 2015, opened on 8 June 2015, inaugurated by the then urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

For a time it was the end of the line. Beyond it runs the stretch known as the Heritage Line, through Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and Lal Quila to Kashmere Gate. The station was expected to take some of the road traffic off the ITO intersection, through which much of the traffic between East Delhi and the rest of the city passes, and to give the offices around it a stop of their own.

DMRC does not publish separate Saturday, Sunday or holiday times for each station, and on special days it announces changes in advance. A last train after midnight belongs to the previous evening’s service. “Not published” means DMRC’s own answer was inconsistent (arrival before departure), so we leave it out.
