The temple that gives the station its name is only a few hundred metres away, and the station itself has two lives. The Violet Line part opened on 3 October 2010 with the first section from Central Secretariat to Sarita Vihar, in time for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony that day; the interchange with the Magenta Line followed on 25 December 2017.

DMRC classes Kalkaji Mandir as underground and says the two lines are joined by a foot over bridge, which is about 260 m long. The Magenta platforms lie at a depth of 17 m, and both tracks pass through a single-tube twin tunnel built with the New Austrian tunnelling method, because the line had to pass beneath the operational Violet Line. DMRC’s own description singles out Kalkaji Mandir, the Lotus Temple and Prachin Bhairav Mandir as the places it serves. Next stops are Govind Puri and Nehru Place on the Violet Line, and Nehru Enclave and Okhla NSIC on the Magenta Line.
